The sense of agency:

"In short, in just the same way that the unconscious brain constructs a conscious model of the external world, so it constructs a model of the self as actor in that world. And, just like the model of the external world, the model of the self-as-agent comes after the event and is open to error."

Latente Inhibition:

Colin DeYoung:

"Latent inhibition is an automatic pre-conscious process that blocks stimuli previously categorized as irrelevant from entering awareness. Dopamine appears to be the primary neuromodulator of latent inhibition, with increased dopaminergic activity producing reduced latent inhibition (Kumari et al., 1999)."

"latent inhibition, an automatic process by which stimuli previously categorized as irrelevant are blocked from entering consciousness."

Emotions in Context of Rank (II):

Emotions in Command
Frank Salter (1995)

"Reptilien kennen keine Freundlichkeit."

Tickling and Humor:

Richard D. Alexander, Ostracism and Indirect Reciprocity:

"In the case of tickling, it seems a reasonable hypothesis that vocal or other physical responses originally functioned (i.e., had as their evolved significance) to keep the tickler tickling. Two curious aspects are that (1) we cannot successfully tickle ourselves ... and (2) our tendency to be ticklish renders us vulnerable to a kind of cruelty in the form of unwanted tickling. I see this vulnerability as paralleling the vulnerability of humans to have evolved to appreciate and use humor that does not involve physical events like tickling to have this appreciation and sensitivity as well turned against them. Vulnerability to excessive tickling, or excessive responsiveness to tickling, sometimes takes the form of being 'goosey,' meaning to be intolerant of tickling - or even the threat of tickling - that a word, gesture, body movement, or simply a stare can be a form of torture and cause a susceptible individual to do extraordinary things ..."

Skin in the Game - Virtue and Risk-Taking:

Transcript

-----

"You see, there’re a lot of virtues, we’re going to talk about virtues, that are fake because anybody can signal these virtues. But risk-taking is real, you cannot fake risk-taking, you cannot fake risk; you can fake virtue. Or what we call, regularly, virtue."

-----

And this is something that people don’t get, is that any virtue that doesn’t entail some kind of sacrifice or cost is not virtue. The gods in the old days did not let you, you know, just, you know, claim to be their subject or something without paying a price, without having something to lose for it.

-----

"Because think about it, if you’re God, you don’t have skin in the game, it’s like in a Superman thing, alright, you have to have some vulnerability somewhere, alright, you have to suffer. So you suffer because you have skin in the game; that’s the whole concept."

Nassim: So I’m gonna finish with a – and then we start the conversation – with one more point, that again is a trader’s story, there’s something I call the Green Lumber Fallacy, is after the following metaphor. There’s a trader who is a fellow who wrote a book on “how I lost a million dollars”, which at the time when he wrote it is very respectable, a million dollars was a lot of money, okay. Now, you know, they didn’t have the Obama years and Greenspan, printing.

Okay, so how did he lose that million dollars. He traded green lumber, and he knew everything about green lumber. He knew the statistics, physics, chemistry, everything, the supply, the demand, the geography, the consumption – he knew everything about green lumber, read every magazine, every book he could find on lumber. And yet, he lost all his money. Turned out there was in the pit a fellow, an old trader, who was very very wealthy, and always made money trading green lumber, he traded nothing else. And one day the narrator discovered that that fellow thought that green lumber was not freshly cut lumber, that it was lumber that they took lumber and painted it green, right, and yet he made a fortune using green lumber.

So what does it tell us, it tells us that from the outside, like an academic approaching a problem, what you need to know it’s not that, what the fellow who made a lot of money his name is I think Siegel, like Jerry Siegel or something like that, was that what he knew was not like it’s not like he didn’t know anything, he knew a lot of stuff, but that stuff you can only detect from the inside, you can never know from the outside what it is, you see.

Naval: You have to play the game to understand it.

Nassim: You have to play the game to know what you need to know. Okay, from the inside not from the outside.

Naval: People are always asking me to recommend a game theory textbook, and the reality is I never read a game theory textbook, when I was young I just played a lot of games.

Denken, Sprechen, Erleben:

Richard D. Alexander - 11/18/1929 - 8/20/2018

Dick passed away August 20, 2018 at age 88 at the Saline Evangelical Home. He was born in White Heath Illinois, and grew up in Piatt County, Illinois. He and his wife Lorraine were married in 1950, and they moved their family to Ann Arbor where Dick began his long and successful career teaching at the University of Michigan. In 1974 Dick and Lorrie purchased their beloved farm in Manchester Michigan. Dick received his Associate Degree from Blackburn College in 1948, his Bachelors of Biological Science from Illinois State Normal University in 1950, and his Masters of Science and a Ph.D of Entomology from Ohio State in 1951 and 1956 respectively. He was in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky from 1951 to 1953. During his career at the U of M Dick held many positions including Director of the Museum of Zoology, Professor of Biology, the Donald W. Tinkle Collegiate Professor, the Theodore H. Hubbell Distinguished University Professor of Evolutionary Biology and Curator of Insects. He had over 40 graduate, masters, and post graduate students; and published over 140 scientific papers and books while with the U of M.

He did extensive field work in numerous places around the world, including a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship for 15 months of systematic work on crickets in Australia with Dan Otte in 1968. He received much recognition for his work in Entomology, Insect Behavior, Speciation, Animal Behavior, Human Behavior, Morality, Kinship Systems, Evolutionary Ecology, and Evolution. Some of his numerous honors, awards, and medals include a bronze medal from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for the outstanding paper presented at the annual meeting in 1961; the Daniel Giraud Elliott gold medal from the National Academy of Sciences in 1991; the inaugural Distinguished Scientific Career Contribution Award from the Human Behavior and Evolution Society in 2008; Distinguished Animal Behaviorist in 2002; along with membership in several Honor and Scientific Societies including the National Academy of Sciences; and distinguished and lectureships throughout the U.S. His teaching awards included the Amoco Good Teaching Award in1977; the Outstanding Educator Award in 1982; and Excellence in Education Award in 1995.

Dick had many varied talents and hobbies which he focused on full time after retirement. He was a talented artist in many medias: pen and ink drawings; oil paintings; wood carvings; and colored pencil drawings. He wrote and illustrated autobiographical stories, children's books, verse, cartoons, and horse training manuals, often with the help of Lynn Lesko. He was also a musician, and could play almost any instrument he chose to pick up. He continued studying all aspects of the horse business; horse social behavior; and horse-human interactions while managing, breeding, raising, and training Quarter Horses from his 2 herds, with the help of Megan Kanta Young. He farmed 80 acres with his neighbor and friend "old" Tom Pyle; collected and repaired antique toys: and created unique knives, fanciful wooden toy vehicles, and numerous other items. His favorite things to do were to be working on the farm, spending time with his grandchildren and extended family, and carving his canes - all of which gave him immense pleasure up until close to the end of his life.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Lorraine Kearnes Alexander; his brother Noel (Donna); his daughters Susan (Sarita) and Nancy; his grandchildren Morgan Alexander Johnson, Lydia Lorraine Turner, Lincoln Alexander Turner, and Winona Johnson Alexander; and his great-grandson Ezekiel Alexander Johnson; and several nieces and nephews; and "young' Tom Pyle who lived with Lorrie and Dick for years while growing up. Dick was a loving husband, wonderful dad, and a perfect grandpa - who was loved dearly, and will be much missed by all of us. A private memorial service will be held at a yet to be determined date.

Russell A. Barkley:

1. Self-Restraint (executive inhibition) – This represents self-stopping or the ability to interrupt the flow of ongoing behavior that serves initially to decouple a stimulus or event from the subsequent response to be prepared for it. It involves (a) the capacity to suppress or otherwise disrupt or prevent the execution of a prepotent or dominant response to an event (the response that has been previously associated with reinforcement or has the highest likelihood of being performed under ordinary circumstances); (b) the capacity to interrupt an ongoing sequence of behavior toward a goal if it is proving to be ineffective; and (c) the capacity to protect the self-directed actions that will subsequently occur and the goal-directed actions they are guiding from interference by external and internal goal-irrelevant events (creating a freedom from distraction or a control of interference).

2. Self-Directed Sensory-Motor Action: This is an alternative means of defining nonverbal working memory and refers chiefly to the use of self-directed visual imagery along with the private rehearsal of visuo-motor actions it permits. While this largely is comprised of visual imagery, or the mind's eye, it also consists of the other senses, such as private hearing to the self, re-tasting, re-smelling, and re-feeling (kinesthetic-proprioceptive experience) to the self. In totality, this EF provides for the conscious, willful re-experiencing of past events that provides a metaphorical Cartesian theater of the mind. Yet, this capacity also eventually comes to include sensory and motor actions to the self that permit an individual to privately practice or re-perform sensory-motor actions to one's self creating a form of mental behavioral simulation.

3. Self-Directed Private Speech: This EF is the alternative explanation for the verbal working memory system to that offered by information processing and traditional cognitive models of EF, such as Baddeley's phonological loop in his model of working memory (Baddeley, 1986; Baddeley & Hitch, 1994). It is based on Vygotsky's theory of the internalization of speech to form the mind's voice used in verbal thinking (see above). Individual's talk to their self to permit not just a private rehearsal of utterances (verbal simulations) but also to self-instruct, self-question, and other verbal means by which language can be used for self-regulation, self-organization, and problem-solving.

4. Self-Directed Emotion/Motivation: This EF is believed to arise from the combination of 1-3 above in which the individual comes to use inhibition, private imagery (and sensing more generally), and private speech to initially inhibit strong emotions and then to down-regulate or otherwise moderate them (Ochsner & Gross, 2005, 2008; Ochsner et al., 2009). They then employ these other EFs to replace the initial strong emotion with alternate emotional responses more consistent with social demands and the individual's goals and longer-term welfare. Because emotions are motivational states, this EF also provides for the capacity for self-motivation – the drive states needed to initiate and sustain action toward the future. Recent research in neuro-imaging and in developing rating scales of EF suggest that the emotion regulation and motivation regulation aspects of this unit may be partially separable both neuro-anatomically (Murray, 2007; Rushworth et al., 2007) and behaviorally (Barkley, 2010c).

5. Self-Directed Play (Reconstitution): This EF is an alternative to the planning, problem solving, and innovative (generativity/fluency) components noted in other views of EF. It is hypothesized to be founded on the development of play and pretense in childhood (Carruthers, 2002) and is seen as essentially a two-step activity. The first is analysis, or taking apart features of the environment and one's own prior behavior toward it. This is followed by synthesis or the recombination of components of the environment and behavioral structures into novel combinations. These novel combinations can then be tested out against a criterion, such as a problem or goal, for their likely effectiveness in over-coming obstacles to goal attainment. While this begins as observable manual play, it progresses like the other EF components to being turned on the self and internalized as a form of private mental play. This permits both the manipulation of mentally represented information about the environment and about prior behavioral structures so as to yield new combinations that can serve as options for problem solving toward goals. It is possible that this component can be subdivided into both nonverbal and verbal modules that provide for fluency and generativity in each of these forms of behavior. Nonverbal, verbal, and action fluencies are believed to arise from this EF.

6. Self-Directed Attention – Self-Awareness: It has become increasingly clear since the foregoing original model of EF was first proposed that a sixth unit may be distinguished from these five. Originally, it was housed within the second module above dealing with self-directed sensory-motor actions, particularly imagery. Yet it is so important as the starting point for EF, has been acknowledged so in prior reviews of PFC functions as the pinnacle EF or central executive, and may arise out of more than just self-directed sensing as to probably warrant being a distinct component of this model. This is the self-direction of attention that comes to create self-awareness. Though listed here as the last component of the model for explication's sake, it likely is the first to arise in development and may well be the most important; out of this module arises self-consciousness or self-awareness that must be seen as a precursor to all other forms of self-regulation set forth above. It is here that the individual becomes conscious or aware of the entirety of their internal and external states, drives, wants, and actions and so achieves an organized, integrated unity or sense of self. As noted previously, this is the prime candidate to be the central executive.
"We can therefore take each EF that researchers have identified and redefine it as a type of self-direct action. Inhibition becomes self-restraint, self-awareness is self-directed attention, verbal working memory is self-speech (talking to yourself, usually using your mind’s voice), nonverbal working memory is seeing to yourself, or using visual imagery along with other forms of self-directed sensing (rehearing previous conversations to yourself, re-perceiving odors you previously smelled or flavors you previously tasted, etc.). And problem-solving could be thought of as self-directed play (taking apart and recombining things or ideas to create novel re-arrangements). By adulthood, all of these are largely invisible to others, or mental in form, such that the person engages in them privately, to themselves, in their mind (brain). Working memory and problem-solving in fact are the ways people typically mentally represent and manipulate information that is being held in our mind (using images and words)."

covert, privatized, internalized:

>[A] progressively greater capacity to suppress the publicly observable aspects of behavior is what is meant ... by the terms “covert, privatized, or internalized."<

Self-Control - What-If?

>Far more than a "just say no" skill, self-control also gives us the gift of "what-if," an inner life that offers us the chance to mentally test out the future without suffering "real world consequences for one's mistakes," notes attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) researcher Russell Barkley. In other words, self-control is the essence of looking-literally and cognitively-before you leap.<

"Free Will":

"I have suggested ... that the concept of free will has essentially nothing to do with the philosophical problem of physical causation, with which it is usually associated, but instead represents the freedom and ability to make decisions in our own individual interests as we see fit - to choose on our own among the alternative scenarios we are able by consciousness and foresight to see before us."

Richard D. Alexander

Inner Conflicts:

>Is it possible that the conflicts Freud thought he identified among the id, ego, and superego are in part the consequences of a "reality check" designed into humans (Dierdre Block, pers. comm.)? Such a reality check could involve grave mental-emotional hurdles if the rules accepted or forced upon us, especially at early ages, turn out not to be serving our interests in the real world in which we have later come to live.<

Mate Ejection:

When Love Dies: Further Elucidating the Existence of a Mate Ejection Module
Brian B. Boutwell, J. C. Barnes Kevin, M. Beaver (2015)

"Given the heterogeneity that exists for ending relationships, it is likely that mate ejection tendencies lie along a continuum. At opposite tales of the distribution, individuals are either very likely, or very unlikely to end a relationship. This is not to say that individuals falling in one tail of the distribution would be incapable of ending a relationship. Rather, that they would be expected to feel either exceedingly conflicted (or exceedingly self-assured, depending on their location along the curve) regarding a decision to break up with their partner."

Intrinsische Belohnungen:

IQ & Retention (II):

>... When persons are equated in degree of original learning of simple material, their retention measured at a later time is only slightly if at all correlated with IQ. The retention of more complex learning, however, involves meaningfulness and the way in which the learner has transformed or encoded the material. This is related to the degree of the learner’s understanding, the extent to which the learned material is linked into the learner’s preexisting associative and conceptual network, and the learner’s capacity for conceptual reconstruction of the whole material from a few recollected principles. The more that these aspects of memory can play a part in the material to be learned and later recalled, the more that retention measures are correlated with IQ.<

Spearman's "Fundamental Laws" (II)

(I) ... a person has more or less power to observe what goes on in his own mind.

(II) ... when a person has in mind any two or more ideas (using this word to embrace any items of mental content, whether perceived or thought of), he has more or less power to bring to mind any relations that essentially hold between them.

(III) ... when a person has in mind any idea together with a relation, he has more or less power to bring up into mind the correlative idea.

Mentors:

>we know from our own experience that the mentors who made a difference in our lives were seldom the ones who praised us effusively but those who demanded our best. At the end of it all, the praise may have been no more than the mentor looking up from our last, best effort and saying “Not bad.” That’s the praise we still cherish years later.<

"Hell yeah!"

Derek Sivers:

>If you’re not saying “HELL YEAH!” about something, say “no”.<

[Certainly, this is in an overstatement. Nevertheless in several cases this approach really makes sense.]

Stereotypy:

"A stereotypy is a repetitive or ritualistic movement, posture, or utterance. Stereotypies may be simple movements such as body rocking, or complex, such as self-caressing, crossing and uncrossing of legs, and marching in place. They are found in people with intellectual disabilitiesautism spectrum disorderstardive dyskinesia and stereotypic movement disorder, but may also be encountered in neurotypical individuals as well."

Proposed causes:

"There are several possible explanations for stereotypy, and different stereotyped behaviors may have different explanations. A popular explanation is stimming, which hypothesizes that a particular stereotyped behavior has a function related to sensory input."

Stereotypies (II):

"[The] development of stereotypies indicates that well-being has probably been poor, with the animal motivated to show a behaviour pattern that it could not perform normally or to completion."

C.J. Mason

-----

"Stereotypies often develop in situations of low stimulus input, physical restraint, and inescapable fear or frustration. These are situations that behavioural and physiological data indicate to be aversive and stressful. Indeed, a behavioural sign of aversion or internal conflict, such as an attempt to escape or a displacement activity, is sometimes the very source from which a stereotypy develops. Furthermore, once well established, stereotypies are often elicited on exposure to a stressor, or to barren conditions."

-----

"Established stereotypies are also commonly performed when little is happening in the environment, and arousal is probably low. This is true, for example, of flying to and fro incaged birds (Hinde 1962), finger-sucking and other stereotypies in children (Levy 1944; Berkson 1967) and rocking in laboratory-caged chimpanzees (Berkson 1967)."

-----

"Like a scar, a stereotypy tells us something about past events. It suggests that previously, a behaviour pattern has been repeatedly elicited, and probably in an environment that has demanded little variation in performance. In captivity, sustained repetition may occur because the behaviour cannot reach a satisfactory, consummatory conclusion, and in barren conditions the behaviour is unlikely to be interupted by higher priority behaviour patterns. Thus stereotypies should warn us that the animal has probably been in an unchanging and frustrating environment, and that its welfare has probably been unsatisfactory. Much evidence does indeed link the development of stereotypies with specific sub-optimal environments. The development of a stereotypy in an individual is therefore the sign of an animal that has probably been suffering, and whose well-being may be poor still."

"The flow of small experiences in everyday life provides myriad testing and training grounds that, by revealing and reinforcing genetic proclivities, catalyzes and consolidates our most basic, most general traits (intelligence, personality) in childhood."

Linda S. Gottfredson

-----

"The 'genes-drive-experience' version of nature-nurture partnership theory (Bouchard, Lykken, Tellegen, & McGue, 1996) emphasizes how people’s genetic individuality shapes their experiences. Genetically distinct individuals evoke and create different environments for themselves[.] ... Scarr’s 'niche-seeking' version of the theory (Scarr, 1997; Scarr & McCartney, 1983) emphasizes the cumulative life-course ramifications of ceaselessly tending toward experiences that comport better with one’s genetic individuality, that is, the pursuit of a congruent ecological 'niche' or place in the world. ... After all, our environments are typically other people, and we constantly nudge and activate, accept and reject, these others in our encounters."

-----

"Behavioral geneticists often describe the personal events and circumstances of our lives as our 'extended phenotypes,' that is, as factors seemingly outside ourselves but actually rooted partly in our own genes."

-----
"Because our environments do not carry our genes, they correlate with our genotypes only because we select, create, and act on those environments."

-----

"An important difference between the development of life niches and of general traits such as intelligence, however, is that general traits develop relatively independently of cultural variation. In contrast, individual differences in life roles, activities, and niches — our extended phenotypes — are less heritable, on average, because cultures channel and constrain the use of even the most heritable traits."

-----

"people certainly do seem to differ in the degree of person-environment fit they achieve."

-----

"some individuals are more likely than others to attain congruent life niches."

-----

"People differ greatly in their inclination to exploit the cultural pathways that are, in fact, available to them."

-----

"Rather, as we enter and leave childhood, it is increasingly left up to us to scan the horizon for possible activities and reference groups, to explore and experiment with the unfamiliar, and to discover what might activate or resonate with our genetic proclivities."

-----

"Initiative may open doors, but stepping through can be difficult. If nothing else, moving toward a more compatible niche means moving away from a birth niche. Rejecting and shedding key elements of one’s life to that point, whether they be activities, daily rhythms, ways of thinking, or friends, can be difficult no matter what the potential benefits may be. Moving away from poor-fitting birth niches may be all the more difficult to contemplate if individuals have worked hard to adjust to them, perhaps by suppressing or twisting themselves to fit in."

"However, some temperaments facilitate this niche-shifting, self-development process more than others. Individuals who are more active, imaginative, self-confident, or “open to experience” (one of the big five personality dimensions) tend to sample more of the possible experiences that a culture provides. Individuals who are chronically passive, pessimistic, or fearful or who for other reasons have less taste for exploring, experimenting, and deviating from the crowd will end up sampling less of what life offers and of what they could be. They will learn less about themselves, develop fewer interests, recognize fewer talents, less often challenge inappropriate expectations and guidance, and venture less far from their birth niches toward more congruent ones. Failing to exploit their environments, they remain underdeveloped and risk unnecessary circumscription and compromise.

-----

"Beginning at birth, the self-directed individuation proceeds mostly outside conscious awareness. Our genotypes operate more like whispers than shouts, nudges than shoves, and their messages are hard to distinguish from the other influences on our behavior. Genetic propensities may typically provide only faint directional signals and seldom decide any of the single actions among the myriad constituting daily life. But no matter how faint they may seem at any single moment, those signals are the most constant and consistent directional force in our behavior and thereby become discernible by the patterns they create. Its emergent pattern of effects gradually makes our inner compass somewhat available to conscious reflection."

-----

"In short, it is only with the dawning and cultivation of self-knowledge that individuals become more the director and less the directed in their own lives."

-----

"Only when the fit between individuals and their actual or expected environments becomes uncomfortable are they likely to envision or seek a more congenial environmentThe shift is likely to be more dramatic, however, when individuals encounter something new (for example, a particular hero, book, activity) to which they resonate powerfully[.]"

-----

"[E]ven when people recognize that they face a poor fit, they differ in their ability and willingness to seek more congenial circumstances."

-----

"People shape the environments they inhabit and the lives they lead to a much greater degree than they imagine. This is not to say that individuals are responsible for all the good and bad that befalls them, only that they have considerable leverage for improving their circumstances, their lives, themselves. We shape our selves by choosing with whom and what to surround ourselves or avoid and by the activities in which we immerse ourselves or refuse to participate."

-----

"Therefore, help counselees to understand which kinds of people, activities, and settings bring out the best or worst in themselves, that is, which environments make it easier or harder for them to be who they want to be, to act in the ways they wish, to evoke positive responses from intimates."

-----

"It is empowering to recognize that one has many opportunities to shape one’s self and life by changing even the little things—perhaps especially the little things—in one’s environment. Put another way, counselors may be able to foster personal development, not just by 'treating' the individual in question but by having the person 'treat' (modify) their own environments."
