"How many invisible people walk amongst us? Guys just going through the motions of day to day life in a state of perpetual dullness. Work at a menial job, no deep relationships, no real sense of purpose.
The invisible man differs from the NPC. He’s capable of independent thought, that might even be part of his downfall, but he is trapped in an inaccessible prison of the self. He forms no connections, he’s a background figure in the shadows.
The nature of his invisibility lies in his nearly non-existence in the minds of others. Sure you see his figure behind the deli counter, but he ceases to inspire much thought. Most people have several versions of themselves floating in mind-space. There’s the version of you in your mind, the version in your friends mind, in your lovers mind, in your family’s mind.
The immortal ancients are in many ways still alive today. Sure their body is dead, but people reanimate them in thought. Conceptions of Alexander, Aurelius, Napoleon etc. are all floating around in the 21st century.
The invisible man on the other hand is a life-long extra. Just passes through on the fringes of the frame. For him, he is the main character, but sadly no-one is watching his film. It can slowly eat away at him. The spirit of vitality that is in him goes asleep. He awaits a reawakening that somehow never comes."

Erwin Schmidt: I like the idea that a person matters in his or her family's mind, in his or her friends' mind, in his or her lovers' mind.
