"American psychologists Charles Carver and Michael Scheier conducted a series of studies about how the exigencies of goal pursuit influence mood. They found that mood is influenced most not by success or failure but by rate of progress toward a goal. Faster-than-expected progress bumps mood up, slower-than-expected progress pushes mood down."
