(Category IV recruits are those whose scores on the Armed Forces Qualification Test fall between the tenth and thirtieth percentiles [equiv­alent to IQs of about 81 to 92]): “ [T]he Category IV soldier did quite well so long as it was clear exactly what was to be done. For instance, these soldiers were able to perform engine maintenance operations that involved long se­quences of operations, providing that there were no choices at each step. On the other hand, the same soldiers were unable to carry out relatively simple repairs in situations where they had to decide what had to be done”.
