What is the essence of the good life?
(The essence of the good life is to spend your days on things you genuinely find worth doing, with people you genuinely care about, while remaining sufficiently free ... to notice that you are living it.
Pleasure comes and goes. Success can leave you strangely empty. Happiness itself is often a by-product. A good life seems to require something more durable: meaningful activity, close relationships, curiosity, physical vitality, some degree of autonomy, and repeated contact with things that deepen rather than merely stimulate you.
A good life is not just a collection of peak experiences. It is a way of arranging ordinary days. Reading, writing, work, conversation, nature, sport, sex, music, family, friendship, solitude—none of these has to be spectacular. Their power comes from returning to them again and again until they form the texture of a life.)
