"Technology is essentially the accumulated ability of human beings to turn knowledge into capability. A scientific discovery tells us something about how the world works; technology asks what we can do with that knowledge. The result can be as simple as a better tool or as complex as a global communications network. In that sense, technology is not limited to computers. Agriculture, electricity, engines, medicine, telecommunications, software, and artificial intelligence all belong to the same long history of extending what humans are able to accomplish.
One of technology’s most important effects is leverage. A person with the right tools can produce vastly more than the same person working without them. A spreadsheet can replace hours of manual calculation, a database can organize millions of observations, and a few lines of code can automate a repetitive task indefinitely. Modern computing takes this especially far because software can be copied almost without cost. Once a useful program exists, the same logic can potentially serve thousands or millions of people. "
