To discover something “valuable,” something “good,” or—in terms of gaining knowledge—something “interesting” in a book, that is the essence, the pivotal point of engaging with nonfiction, of reading nonfiction.
Spending a few hours letting the thoughts found in the book run through one’s mind. Listening to an author speak. Occasionally responding to what’s taken in with one’s own reflections.
That’s it. That’s all there is to it.
