"Folk Art" versus ...

According to Christian Lehmann in its origins the main function of singing/music was the emotional bonding (and behavioral synchronization, respectively) of mother and infant, of families, and of groups. Probably aesthetic preferences vary widely across the world. So it sounds unreasonable to suggest that an art (or high culture) could be created that truly bonds whole humanity.

  1. It may sound unreasonable, but it doesn't seem implausible or even improbable given memetic systems like religions that bind unrelated, disparate people into groups, and given commercial products that do likewise.

  2. (A) perhaps on average these people are not completely unrelated (B) it's likely that some/most of these bonds are extremely weak (C) these groups are generally much smaller than whole humanity

  3. Thanks for your comment, Staffan. I replaced C. with Christian.
