Paying Attention to Humans versus Paying Attention to Beetles:

Living Fossils, Josh:

"all else being equal, humans pay more attention to other humans than to beetles. This is because other humans are far more relevant to our survival and reproduction than beetles."

-----

Humans are endowed with a capacity to override natural tendencies. So by sheer effort of the will we are able to attend to stimuli, wo aren't naturally inclined to pay attention to.  Such efforts are needed to acquire skills in artificial environments such as the modern school environments.
