What is Data Science?

John D. Kelleher:

"Data science encompasses a set of principles, problem definitions, algorithms, and processes for extracting non-obvious and useful patterns from large data sets."

What is a model?

A model represents a pattern in a data set.

-> Some of these representations are better than other representations. How well does a specific model represent a pattern? And why do we want to acquire knowledge about this patterns? -> when we acquire knowledge about patterns, when we model these patterns, we can, to some extent, predict the future
