In einem früheren Post von heute habe ich Gesamteindrücke angesprochen, und dass es bei der Wahl von Freunden bzw. von Partnern eher um Gesamteindrücke als um das Vorhandensein oder um die Abwesenheit einzelner Details geht.
Beim "gewissen Etwas" ließe sich das auch so formulieren: Wenn wir da ein Bild haben, das wir wieder und wieder anschauen können, da es das "gewisse Etwas" hat, obwohl wir dieses "gewisse Etwas" nicht unbedingt beschreiben können. Oder ein Film, der immer wieder aufs Neue einen Reiz ausübt. Eine Person, mit der man sich immer wieder aufs Neue unterhalten kann. Ein Buch, das einen lange begleitet und lange zu denken gibt. Et cetera, et cetera.
Man verliebt sich ins "gewisse Etwas" einer anderen Person, liebt oder befreundet sich mit einem "gewissen Etwas", ohne volle Klarheit haben zu können, wie sich all das genau ereignet hat.

In an earlier post today, I mentioned overall impressions, and that when choosing friends or partners, it’s more about overall impressions than about the presence or absence of some specific features or traits.
When it comes to that “special something,” it could be put like this: If we have a picture we can look at it again and again because it has that “special something,” even though we can’t necessarily describe what it is. Or a film that exerts its charm on us time and again. A person with whom one can always have new and engaging conversations. A book that stays with you for a long time and keeps you thinking. And so on, and so on.
We fall in love with that “special something” of another person, love or befriend a “special something,” without ever having full clarity about how exactly it all came to be.
