Alexander: "Consider this handful of robust predictors of life outcomes such as relationship status, divorce, educational achievement, and income: 1. Cognitive ability. 2. The Big Five traits of conscientiousness and neuroticism. 3. Locus of control. 4. Antisocial behavior. You’ll rarely find someone who is a failure in life who is smart (high cognitive ability), hardworking and diligent (high conscientiousness), highly agentic (internal locus of control), and who doesn’t sabotage it with deviant aggression (antisocial behavior)."
"So what’s going on with the losers in life? It doesn’t emerge from just one deficiency. These tend to be people who are not as smart as they think they are (but may alienate people - high antisocial behavior), don’t work very hard, can’t be depended upon, suffer from various mental problems and emotional instability (high neuroticism), and who are low in agency. And all of these traits correlate in the population by the way. They aren’t randomly distributed. So you can see this kind of personality that I described pop up over and over."
